Is Pregnancy Possible Despite Taking Birth Control Pills Regularly?

Hello. I m 22 years old and on BC pills (sprintec). If I take the pill at the same time every single day, am I still likely to get pregnant from unprotected sex? My boyfriend and I have stopped using condoms (we re both clean). I know the pill is 99% effective when taken perfectly. However, does this still leave a 1% chance that I could be pregnant? I ve experienced bleeding roughly a week and a 1/2 before my expected period and am afraid it may be implantation bleeding

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Yes, as you said if you used the OC pills as per the schedule without missing pill or time the possibility of pregnancy is very less. And yes, rarely 1% of failure probability is there. But as that is very low, no need to worry. The bleeding you had could be breakthrough bleeding as side effect of pills. Usually this type of minor bleeding will subside soon without the need of medication. So, you can wait till your expected date of withdrawal bleeding, if you miss your expected date, please go for urine pregnancy test once. If test gives negative result, you can continue with your next pack of pills.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
