Is Random Microalbumin Test Result Of 171 Cause For Concern?

My son has Type 2 diabetes. He is 27 and 122 lbs. He maintains his levels with metformin. He had a recent random microalbumin test and the level was 171 up from 52 last year at this time. It has me very nervous I am waiting for his Dr. to call back. His creatinine and GFR levels are well within normal range. He had encephalitis prior to the onset of diabetes which they think caused the diabetes. Anyway what is your opinion about that level? I am a worrier.

Diabetologist 's  Response
Dear i can understand your concern.
The condition what you're facing is called diabetic nephropathy.
The good news is this condition is reversible to certain extent.
There are some medications like telmisartan and olmesartan which are having good efficacy in reversing microalbumin.
In my opinion you can undergo 24 hrs urine collection and testing for 24 hr protein which will give better result than spot urine estimation.
There is nothing to worry with medication and good diabetes control he will become alright soon.
Hope I was able to help you.
If you have any further question fell free to write me back.I will be happy to help.
Take care.
