Had unprotected sex with a sex worker and felt feverish and nasal stuffiness after 3 weeks. Developed a rash in week 4 until week 8. Got tested for HIV using rapid hiv antibody tests at 4, 6 and 8 weeks and all results were negative. how accurate are these results
Hello Laboratory diagnosis of HIV infections depends on the demonstration of anti-HIV antibodies and /or the detection of HIV or one of it components. The standard screening test for HIV infection is the detection of antibodies using enzyme immunoassay( EIA). This is kn known as rapid HIV antibodies test and this test is highly SENSITIVE ( >99.5%) and is quite specific . Western blot is the best test . Antibodies to HIV begin to appear within 2 weeks of infection and the period of time between initial infection and the development of detectable antibodies is rarely > 3 months. In your case 8 weeks . So in my opinion you are HIV free.
