Is Rapid Heartbeat Of Baby At 33 Weeks Of Pregnancy Cause For Concern?

Hello,

My daughter in law went to her appt today, she is in her 33rd week and the Dr. is concerned that the baby's heartbeat is to rapid and wants her to see a specialist tomorrow. That is all they were told, they are very upset tonight and wondering what this could mean?

Hello dear,I understand your concern. In my opinion the increased or decreased fetal heart rate (FHR)is seen in case of fetal distress.Normal fetal heart rate range is 100 to 160/min.There might be many causes for
increased FHR like fever in mother, anaemia, any amniotic fluid infection, any growth retardation of fetus, any placental abnormalities etc.But in all these there are other clinical features along with increased FHR.So I suggest you to rule out the causes causing it.Isolated FHR might not be that significant if fetal movements and all other parameters like liquor status,Doppler study are good.
Best regards..Dr srilatha
