Hi,

Renal pelvis is a dilatation of pelvis of kidney which is a basin like structure, which collects the urine in kidney and this urine goes to ureter from the pelvis. Most of the times, these patients lead a normal healthy life. About 2.5% of all antenatal ultra sounds will show presence of renal pelvis dilatation, of one or both kidney. Usually most newborn with this condition do not need any further follow up.

However, in some cases we are to rule out congenital anomalies of kidney and urinary tract which may present renal pelvis dilatation due to urinary tract obstruction or vesico-ureteric reflux. These condition need follow up and in some cases medical or / and surgical intervention may be needed. However, urine infection in some of these cases may need a course of antibiotic. Still, one thing should be always kept in mind, that as majority of these cases will have a normal life without any further intervention, therefore unnecessary tests on the neonates may need to be avoided.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi,

In most of the cases, renal pelvis swelling in new born babies is transient and will resolve its own in 2-3 months. We can repeat the scanning after 6-8 weeks. Stay relaxed.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
