Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 22 year old woman, I am overweight but have just lost around 2.5st over the last 5 months and have been walking for at least an hour each day, plus visiting the gym between 1-2 times a week. I have just started a nursing degree, and just checked my resting pulse as practice for class and it was 55bpm. I looked it up and the internet says this is a really good pulse for a woman athlete!!! Now i am nowhere near an athlete as I am 5'5" and 200lbs. I just want to know if this is quite low? My pulse is more or less always between 50-60 unless Im exercising. Is this normal or should I see someone?
Dear Madam Thanks for writing to us. Every individual has his or her pulse rate in a different and unique range. For theoretical purpose normal range is for 60-100 beats per minute. However all individuals with values outside this range are not abnormal. If you do not have any symptoms attributable to your pulse rate (blackout/ syncope/ passing out/ dizziness), then it will be considered as normal. Sincerely Sukhvinder
