Is Ringing In Ear,tightness Around Ear And Temple Sign Of TMJ?

I've been told by an ENT that I have TMD/J on the right side. I've had ringing in my ears since I was a teenager (I'm 51 yrs old) and over the last few years the tightness in and around my ear and into my temple have become irritating. It's sore in that area to the touch. I've also had two doctors diagnosis to be stress related as well. Basically the doctors I've seen have told me about some exercises to do and a mouth guard at night. I've been doing these for months but it's still annoying. Any help/suggestions?

Hello Sir,
Thanx for the query, I will be very much happy if I could help you.

Yes the signs and symptoms you have described are collectively called TMD (temporomandibular disorder). TMD can occur due to trauma or dislocation of articular disc of the joint, disturbed occlusion of teeth, arthiritis or even stress can create such problem.

It seems you are very much annoyed and stressed about this but still you have to be relax. I will advice you to visit specialist dentist(oral & maxillofacial surgeon) and discuss the other investigative methods like(RADIOGRAPHS,
ARTHROGRAPHY, CT SCANS, MRI, TMJ ARTHROSCOPY ACOUSTIC EVALUATION) to diagnose the exact cause.

Meanwhile I am advising few things-
- Continue the ongoing treatment
- Avoidance of muscle strain (i.e. gum chewing, clenching)
- Avoidance of events that can trigger pain or discomfort.
- Apply an ice pack to the side of your face and temple area for about 10
minutes. Then do your usual jaw exercise. After 10-15 min apply a warm
towel or washcloth to the side of your face for about 5 minutes. Perform
this routine a few times(4-5) each day.
- You can take over the counter pain killer like Ibuprofen thrice daily for 3-4
days.
- Yoga/meditation/other activities is advised to reduce any type of mental
stress.

I hope I answered your query. If there is any more query or question regarding this in your mind, you are free to ask me any time.
