My son appears to have schzopherinia, as per the Dr. but at times, he looks normal. If he has that disease, then tell me if it is curable. what are its symptoms. How much time it takes to cure? Pl. advise if we shouldl admit him in some hospital or it can be cured while at home.

Psychiatrist Dr. Jonas Sundarakumar's  Response
Hello and thanks for writing in.

Schizophrenia is a chronic / relapsing mental illness which is usually characterized symptoms like hallucinations, abnnormal beliefs or delusions, etc. Some persons can also have symptoms like dullness, amotivation, withdrawn, isolated behaviour, etc.

There are good treatments available with anti-psychotic medication, but there is no permanent cure. Treatment is usually for a long term since there is a risk of recurrence and relapse. Treatment will also invole rehabilitation to help the person regain his socio-occupational functioning. The decision whether to take treatment at home or in the hospital will depend on the nature and severity of the symptoms.
