Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, I was sterilizing baby bottles and pacifiers in a boiling pot of water and I fell asleep…3 hours later, I remembered, jumped out of bed and realized that my apt smelled of burnt plastic and most of it had melted and some burned. The air was a tiny foggy. My babys room is closest to the kitchen. Is the smell / toxins harmful? I threw the pot out outside the apt, opened all windows and sprayed lysol and now I put bowls of vinegar around also. Should I leave the apartment? Is one exposure to this harmful? SHould I get more vinegar?
Yes the fumes coming out of burnt plastic are harmful. But the amount that is inhaled is important. As it happened in a room separate from the kitchen your kids should not have inhaled any toxic amount. Leaving the apartment is not required. Only opening up of windows and increasing the ventilation will suffice.
