Is Smoking And Drinking While On Atenolol For Low BP Unsafe?
I am 59 and never had high blood pressure until 1 year ago. That is also when PVCs started happening. Saw a heart doc, had echocardiogram and everything looked ok except for small leaky valve that doc wasn t worried about. Now my PCP put me on Atenolol to quiet the palps and lower BP. Is it dangerous if I occasionally smoke pot and/ or have a glass of wine? I m also having urinary problems that will be checking out with a specialist. The PCP said if I feel too groggy on Atenolol at 25mg I can cut in half. Do you agree?
Not at all dangerous in general. Atenolol 25 is a very low dose not sure it can do anything at a lower dose. Marijuana has (slight) effects that are counter to beta blockers but there is not a strong interaction because marijuana does not have a strong stress hormone effect. Some people have asthma from it. that would be bad. Atenolol can make asthma worse in a (very) few people. alcohol is frequently recommended in low amounts as a heart healthy addition to lifestyle. We're talking moderation in these. The one that seems a bit off is 12.5 of atenolol... otherwise makes sense in general.
