Is Sudden Hearing Loss Considered A Medical Emergency?
My 82 year old mother has a blood pressure of 154/74 and is feeling and acting/thinking slowly. Something is awry. She also had sudden onset hearing loss in one ear about two weeks ago. An MRI revealed no issues and she is taking prednisone as the newest medicine. Do I need to do anything emergent for her?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Possible causes of sudden hearing loss are
1. Ear wax or small objects block the ear canal
2. An autoimmune disease
3. Diseases caused by bacteria or viruses
4. A head injury
5. Hearing a sudden, very loud noise
6. Side effects of certain medicines.
So it is an emergency. You have to consult your ENT specialist, he will examine and treat you accordingly.
Take care.
