Is Surgery Recommended For This Pelvic Ultrasound Test Result?

I just had a pelvic ultrasound and they found irregular cyst 3.0 cms with 2-3 smaller cysts on my right ovary and 2.2 cm clear cyst on my left ovary with free fluid present and an area of heterogenous echotexture between uterus and left ovary 4.0cm they think is an old fibroid. Dr. is recommending surgery for biopsy of my ovaries? does this sound legitimate? I am 62 years of age.

Hello,

At your age, the presence of such cysts with the differential pattern along with a possible mass in the pelvis calls for further evaluation. If possible, laparoscopy or hysteroscopy and visualization of the internal organs along with samples taken for histopathological studies wherever necessary are recommended. Tests for tumor markers along with a complete blood work are also needed. Further management can be planned accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
 Dr. Shanti Vennam
