Is Taking Bactrim Safe While On Sotalol For Sulfa Allergy?
A doctor has prescribed bactrim despite me having a reported sulfa drug allergy; doctor is aware of the allergy but thinks with appropriate monitoring for possible side effects, it might be ok. The allergy was reported to me by my mother, and dates from childhood. She characterized the reaction as severe swelling ( you blew up ) but she was occasionally prone to hyperbole. I have no experience with it. I also take sotalol, which rules out the other antibiotic for treating this infection, due to a potential interaction issue. Good idea to proceed or get more info?
cannot say in your particular case, but generally, allergic reactions are bad. Childhood histories of reactions that do not sound like hives or asthma often are NOT allergic reactions to medicines and if someone is closely monitored then one might consider an action that sounds bad (using a drug someone is "allergic to"). But, then again, interaction with antibiotic with sotolol is mighty rare (rifampin?!? or other tuberculosis antibiotics?!?) and you could monitor the interaction with sotolol closely too.
