i am 30 weeks pregnant and my blood group is B+ . i am 28 years old and weighs about 66 kgs. no physical or any other anomaly. Since my first baby was caezarean and i conceived soon aftr my first child ( 7 months aftr my first baby's birth) so my gynae said that she will deliver the baby in 35-38 weeks and therefore has advised 2 betnasol injections of 12 mg at 24 hrs interval for the growth of the lungs of the baby. i want to know whether it is safe for the baby as well as myself since its a steriod and will it affect the baby later as there would be growth of its lungs ARTIFICIALLY??
there is absolutely no reason to be afraid of. Betamethasone injection is widely used for lung maturation in unborn children. True it is a steroid, but the adverse effects are mostly associated with prolong use of steroids and at high doses. In your case, the break down of the drug will largely be carried out by your system.
There is no reason to be afraid of if the Obstetrician wants to do lung maturation. However, if delivery has to be at 35weeks or above, there might be no need for the lung maturation since lung maturation is completed at 34 weeks gestation.
However, your Obstetrician knows you better and is surely the right person to decide.
Best regards and hope this helps Dr Achuo
