Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Taking Potassium Of 10 Mg Dangerous Along With Normal Diet?
My doctor said lab test showed low potassium, I have been tired and not feeling well. she has put me on 10mg of supplements twice a day. Is that safe? will I be in danger of having to much potassium with a normal diet and the supplements. My level was 3.2 this time and 3.3 last time.
Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns. Normal plasma potassium levels are between 3.5 to 5.0 mEq/L. Mild hypokalemia (>3.0 mEq/L) may be treated with oral potassium chloride supplements. Dosage-ADULTS: PO 20 to 100 mEq in divided doses. The Adequate Intake (AI) for potassium is 4,700 milligrams/day for males and females ages fourteen through adulthood.Since your potassium level still remains below 3.5 and above 3, you need to continue potassium supplement with your normal diet.
