Is Taking SMZ-TMP DS Advisable While On Ciprofloxacin And Cephalexin For Cellulitis?
I am being treated for Cellulitis. I have been diagnosed with Lymphodema approx 10 years ago. I have been prescribed Ciprofloxacin (which I have taken in the past along with Cephalexin for this problem. Took both together as the Cipro didn t clear the infection by itself) and Clindamycin. Discontinued Clindamycin due to instant dyarrhia. Next prescribed Sulfameth/TMP, but it cautions taking with high potassium levels, which I have had. I take Benicar for blood pressure, Simvastatin and levothyroxcin and torsemid for water retention and to lower potassium levels.I am concerned about the Sulfameth/TMP. In this case I went to an urgent care facility as my regular doctor was on vacation, and her PA (who is new) was booked
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
As per your case history of cellulitis, my treatment advice is :
1. Don't scratch the lesion as it may worsen the condition. 2. Apply a mild antibiotic cream like fusiderm cream twice daily on it. 3. Take an NSAID (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ibuprofen for 5-7 days. 4. There is no need for taking SMZ-TMP (sulfamethoxazole/ Trimethoprim) along with the other antibiotics.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
