Is Temporary Hearing Loss While Suffering From Cold A Concern?

Hi Doctor Sumit, I ve had a cold for a few weeks now and it s gone from fever/aches and a runny nose, to a blocked nose, blocked left ear (which I had hearing issues from normally for about a decade now) and a sore throat on the left side. My ear is worrying me as I have issues in that ear when I m not sick. Is this worth me going to my GP for? I ve been sick for around two weeks now.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of hearing loss while suffering from cold which could be due to autoimmune inner ear disease , very loud noise , acoustic neuroma , physical head injury. Cold can also cause temporary hearing loss. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper examination. You should get it examined immediately to prevent further exaggeration of symptoms. Doctor may order CT scan , blood test , examination with otoscope . Doctor may prescribe antibiotics amoxicillin or penicillin, anti inflammatory medications. Doctor can recommend you surgery. You should use hearing aid as that is the best treatment possible.
