Is The Bleeding A Withdrawal Bleeding Due To Levonelle?
hi, i took Levonelle 5 days ago and today i experienced bleeding similar to period bleeding, however my period should start in 2 weeks. i do understand it can come earlier due to taking emergency pill. I plan to start regular hormonal contraception (Microgynon) and seeing that the first pill should be taken on the first day of my menstruation i am not sure if i should take it today? basically, how can i know if the bleeding i m experiencing is my early period or just a withdrawal bleeding due to Levonelle? Many thanks for your help!

Hello dear, Thank for your question.
Emergency contraception is widely known to cause irregular bleeding as a common adverse effect. Other side effects may include: nausea, headache, dizziness, vomiting etc .This is perfectly normal and should be no cause for concern. It usually last for a few days after taking the pill.
Depending on what time of your menstrual cycle you used the pill, menstruations might appear sooner or later than expected. But that usually doesn't include more than week before or after the date you expected your menstruations. If I understood it correctly, you weren't expecting your menstruation for another 2 weeks, therefore it is safe to say that the bleeding you have been experiencing is related to the pill. I suggest you wait till you next cycle for starting Microgynon.
It is strongly advised that you take a pregnancy test, 2 weeks after using the pill to confirm the pill was effective.
I hope this helped. Don't hesitate to contact me, if you have further questions. All the best, Dr. Alma
