Is There Any Adverse Effect Of Accidentally Coming In Contact With Lidocaine In The Eye?

I’m an intern at a dental office. While I was setting up the patient for numbing I pressed too hard on the syringe and lidocaine accidentally splashed into my eyes. The needle and syringe were new (unused) but my only concern is can this cause any bad side effects? I don’t feel my eyes numb or stinging they just got really red. I immediately rinsed my eyes and face with water.

Hi,

No, there is usually no adverse effects of contact with Lidocaine in the eye other than perhaps a short term (hours) irritative effect. You should absolutely not experience any long term effects from this.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Maria Riechel-Sarup, General & Family Physician
