Is There Any Chance Of Heavy Bleeding Or Any Life Threatening After Taking Mifeprin And Misoprost Tablets?

Hi Doc, My wife is 5 weeks pregnent and had consulted for the same she advised to take mifeprin 200 on 20th march and 4 tabs of misoprost 200 on 22nd march together, I wanted to know if there is any chace of heavy bleeding or any life thretning for my wife . Her age is 30 years and already has an issue 5 year back through normal delevery, please suggest urgently since tomorrow she has to start medicine.

I am Dr Nilajkumar a consultant gynecologist and I will be helping you in your queries.

Your question is very relevant and important.

These drugs do cause excessive bleeding in a few cases and an emergency surgical abortion procedure may be needed in a few women and a blood transfusion in very rare cases.

However most women respond very well and have a successful procedure if the drugs are taken as per instructions under medical supervision. So it is safe if done as per instructions. Most of the times the bleeding is just slightly heavier than a routine period and a few clots and bits of fleshy tissue may be passed according to the duration of pregnancy.

So start the drugs but at the slightest suspicion of heavy bleed, please see your doctor and get a check curettage procedure [ to remove any tiny bits left inside] and there will not be any problem. In 99% cases this is not needed as the abortion is complete with drugs alone.
