Is There Any Vitamins And Minerals That He Should Take To Help Him With His Energy Level?
Hello, My father is 78 yo and was diagnosed with MDS back in Sept. 2013. His Oncologist is giving him weekly shots of Aranesp at 1mcg. I was wondering if there are any vitamins and minerals that he should be on that will help slow down the progression and/or help him with his energy level. Thank you for any recommendations you can give! Linda
Hi Linda, Aranesp is a man made protein used to increase the amount of RBC production in patients with low hemoglobin. It is a form of erythropoietin. During increased production, nutritional deficiency if present could lead to nutritional anemia. I would advise you to ask him to start B-complex group of vitamins along with iron and folic acid tablets. Looks for any allergic reactions, when you start these.
Nutritionally also you can look into modifying the diet like green leafy vegetables, egg, fish so the Aranesp injection can perform its function more effectively.
Increased risk of thrombosis is seen on treatment due to Aranesp. Soo look for any symptoms of chest pain, syncope or breathlessness. If any of the symptoms are present, immediately meet your doctor.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
