Is There Something Natural To Get My Appetite?

My friend aged 87, has a problem eating. She is very active and walks a lot. However as she cannot keep her food down or is repulsed by eating her energy level is depleting. Her GP did all the tests, nothing is wrong with the digestive system He put her on Valium , she is not happy about it. Is there something natural to get her an appetide. She used to enjoy her food.

Thanks for your question.

Loss of appetite can be a concerning symptom. It is nonspecific and can be caused by many things, from anemia to depression to cancer. Lack of energy and lack of appetite are two signs of major depressive disorder. If her GP performed routine tests and found nothing of concern, her primary problem may be psychiatric in nature.

I would not recommend using Valium in an 87 year old person, because benzodiazepines like Valium contribute to confusion and falls in that age group. If he is anxious, I would consider an antidepressant such as an SSRI.

In short, I think your friend would benefit from talking to her primary care doctor or psychiatrist about her mood, consider the possibility of depression, and stop taking Valium (slowly wean off of it under the supervision of her doctor).

I hope this helps you.
