Is Tinnitus Common To Occur In Brain Tumor Patients?
I have a friend that has a brain tumor. She recently developed ringing in the ears and has a balance problem. Could the tumor be pushing on nerves causing these problems? She has seen several doctors that are not addressing this as much of a problem, but it REALLY is bothering her.
A brain tumor pressing on either the cochlear nerve from the inner ear or on any of the projecting fibers into the brainstem or cerebellum can experience the symptoms you describe of imbalance and tinnitus. If these symptoms are bothering her more than anything else then, she should get a couple of things: 1. Audiogram 2. Tinnitus Exam (usually can be done by specially trained audiologist 3. Neuro-otologist (Neurologist or ENT person with fellowship training and expertise in the hearing and balance systems). Tumor pressure against the cochlear nerve or parts of the brainstem or cerebellum can lead to imbalance, hearing losses, and tinnitus. She would best be served probably by either a Neurologist or Neuro-otologist or alternatively an audiologist who is specialized in doing TINNITUS EXAMINATIONS who can also test her sense of balance and tell whether it's something peripheral (ie outside the brain/spinal cord) or central (ie inside the brain/spinal cord axis). I read your question carefully and I appreciate your concern about your friend.
In order to answer your question though I am afraid more information is needed regarding the location and size of the tumor. Brain tumor symptoms vary a lot depending on location and size, some locations may be associated with the symptoms you describe, but hard to say whether this is such a case with the information at hand.
I remain at your disposal for other questions.
