Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a nanny and the little boy i nanny for has been diagnosed with tonsilitis. My son comes to work with me and i am worried that he may catch it also. The boys are both 1 yrs old and i found them sharing the same drinking beaker last week and the boy i nanny for was diagnosed yesterday. My son has been off his food for about 3 days and has a cough.
Thanks for asking on HealthCareMagic. Tonsils are lymphoid organs located at the back of our throat and are responsible for controlling infections. Generally tonsillitis is caused either due to some bacteria like Streptococcus or some virus like Epstein Barr Virus. Both the conditions can be transmitted from one person to other either by sharing contaminated items or by the germs in the air due to acts of sneezing and coughing. However, such organisms are also present in our environment anyway irrespective of an infection. I would not recommend sharing items and to maintain general hygeine but nothing more. You need not get alarmed.
I hope that helps. Feel free to revert back in case of further queries if any.
