Is Venlafaxine And Duloxetine Generic For Cymbalta And Treat The Same Way?

My current insurance plan will no longer pay for my 60 mg. of cynbalkta daily. I was switched to a generic called venlafaxine for cost saving measures. My insurance drug page lists duloxetine as the generic for cymbalta. Are these 2 the same drug or treat the same way cymbalta does? Thank you!

Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

Both- venlafaxine and duloxetine (Cymbalta)- belong to the same Class of Drugs called Selective Serotonin and Epinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SSNRI) and are used for the same conditions.

So, it is perfectly OK to take venlafaxine, which is equally effective as Cymbalta. The only difference is the dosage of the two drugs. Your doctor will adjust the dose of venlafaxine, depending on the response.
