Kick In The Face Still Tender, Throbs, Increased Heart Rate. Could It Be Broken ?

My son was kicked in the face while sparring 10 days ago. He says it's still very tender and throbs whenever his heart rate is up. He had no bruising and very little bleeding. There doesn't appear to be any deformity. Could it be broken? Is there any real treatment, or does it just require time to heal? It's only the throbbing that seems odd after 10 days. Thanks.

Hi! Thank you for your question!

I suggest that your son consult a surgeon so that he can at least get a cranial Xray done to make sure that there aren't any small minor fractures. Sometimes, such fractures can be just minor cracks in the bone that may not present with any deformity but can be very tender and inflamed (and even throbbing).

In the meantime, please have him protect the area (a short break from sparring would be a good idea too) so that no further injuries will occur.

I hope I answered your question! I wish both of you well.

Take care!

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

This is just to let you know that Facial bones are very fragile and weak bones. There is a possilbility that your son might have had a bony injury.

Generally, the soft tissue swelling and pain should settle down within 2 weeks. If it still hurts after 2 weeks, then an xray of the injured area is taken to rule out any bony injury.

Consult your treating physician and follow his advice.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hello and Welcome to HCM,
Thanks for writing to us.
It might be soft tissue injury or fracture.
Without X-ray, it is difficult to differentiate a fracture from others. I suggest you to consult an orthopaedician nearby for a detailed examination. You may get the X-ray of the area affected under his/her guidance.
Meanwhile give rest to the part.He can take anti-inflammatory drug like motrin to reduce pain and inflammation.
Hope this helps you.
Wishing you good health...
Regards.
