Kid Is Passing Very Hard Stools With Large Amount Of Green Color Watery Stool. What Is The Cause?

My 2 year old has been passing very hard stools and then after about 2 or 3 will pass a large hard stool and also large amounts of watery stool, most times light green. She cries terribly when trying to go, sweats and complains that her tummy and legs hurt. He tummy has been bloated off and on. This has lasted for 1 week. We have increased her water and apple juice intake, are giving her more pears and apples, and she only eats whole grain bread and cereals. She is not on any medications currently, although we did try pedialax for 2 days last week, 3 tablets each day, but it was not very effective. This is the first time this has happened. We are calling to set an appt with the Dr. tomorrow, but I am very concerned. What could be causing this?

Hi there,

Thank you for choosing healthcaremagic.
I would be happy to answer you.

You mentioned that your child has had very hard stools with bloating and pain in her tummy when she is trying to defecate.

It seems like she has been constipated and is now having much trouble with her bowel movements. At times, while having a bowel movement, there may have been a tear or fissure in the anal area causing her to unable to defecate without difficulty and thus causing a vicious cycle of constipation.

I would suggest that you continue with her fiber diet, increase her daily water intake. You can try giving her glycerin enema or suppository for now if she is in significant discomfort. Also, she may need to take miralax or other laxatives on a daily basis to regularize her bowel movement.

Your doctor may suggest other options for constipation based on his complete evaluation.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
Regards,
Dr. Sumeet.
