Knee And Lower Leg Injury, Swelling, Painful, Itchy Rash. What Should I Be Concerned About?

Yes! I fell two weeks ago injuring my knee and lower leg. The knee was quite swollen, but never really hurt to stand on it. The entire front of the leg along the shin bone and the knee turned black and blue and most of it has faded tdo a beautiful shade of yellow, but now I have a itchy rash after standing on it for 5 hours. Is this anything that I should be concerned about? I chose not to seek medical advice as it would have been non comp as the fall occurred at work.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

You could have sustained a soft tissue hematoma that might be changing colors as it is being healed. The itchy rash may be a part of the soft tissue healing process due to local release of histamine by the injured tissue. So there is nothing much to worry about.

If your itching is intractable, then use some antihistamine preparation for a few days. And for your rash, apply some soothening lotion like aloevera or calamine.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for writing to us

If you are able to walk and able to move the joints of the foot actively then there is unlikely possibility of a fracture.

It could be only a soft tissue injury which generally subsides over a period of time spontaneously without any issues. Itchy rash could be due to irritation of tissue. These will resolve with time.

Hope this helps you. Let me know if you have any more concern.
