Knee Injury Due To Fall, Large Bruise, Swollen Center, Reddish Purple Discoloration. Bleeding Under Skin?
my 93 year old mother who is on coumadin fell while walking with her walker and hit her knee 7 days ago. a large bruise developed. most of it is fading, but the center is swollen and reddish purple. she had knee replacements many years ago. the reddish purple part on the kneecap is shiny and painful. is the reddish color meaning that it is still bleeding under the skin?
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The color changes and a gradually increasing swelling could be due to a continued bleeding from the area. She needs to decrease the doses of coumadin after getting a coagulation profile done. The collected blood may need to be drained surgically.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.
