Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello my son is 5 years old and has had leftsided rib pain for the last two weeks he had a chest x-ray but it came back clear, he has joint hypermobility syndrome with overuse syndrome, since he was 18 months old but with the rib pain he is in so much pain he can't sleep. And is crying in pain, is there anything you can think of that is causing this?
Hypermobility syndromes can produce pain in muscles and ligaments due to over use, or due to use beyond the normal range of movement for a given joint. At the same time, this is rather impossible to occur in ribs, as the rib cage is relatively fixed and the internal joints are not so active as to cause severe pain.
You should ask him about trauma (sprain or some blunt injury which won't show up on the X ray), and ask the physician to conduct tests to rule out deficiency of vitamin D and C. If any of these deficiencies are found, they are easily treatable with supplements of the vitamins or with calcium, for example.
