Lost Interest In Sex, Having Erectile Problems. Used Antidepressants For Some Time. Advice?

Sir, I have been using anti depressants for some time. Now I am free from the symptoms, and stopped taking
medicines. But I have a severe erectile problem. I will put it this way that I have completely lost interest in sexual
erousal or feeling, although I like to have sex. I am 65-years of age, and stay active in life, enjoy life. Viagra at 50-
mg does not seem to help. Please advise.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for using healthcare magic.

Sexual dysfunction in your case might be due to either of following
- Loss of desire as a symptom of depression
- Antidepressant drug induced sexual dysfunction
- Physical causes like low testosterone level.

You should consult your psychiatrist for detailed evaluation. Doctor may advise you to go for blood tests like testosterone level or prolectine level.

Treatment would be directed as per cause.
Thanks.

Psychiatrist Dr. Sundar Gnanavel's  Response
Hello.....
Thanks for your query. The antidepressant effect requires a wash out period of upto 5 weeks depending on which antidepressant you were taking previously. The sexual side effects may hence continue till this period. Use of natural aphrodisiacs like almonds, green leafy vegetables might help you. You also require an assessment for blood sugar and blood pressure at your age. Wish you good health.
