Movable Lump On Knee With On And Off Pain When Getting Hung Up. History Of Having Similar Lump Long Ago. Any Ideas?

I am 48 yrs old, in good health, 6 ft 165 lbs, former runner, lots of soccer playing. Have lately been riding a stationary bike regularly and have noticed a small BB sized moveable 'lump' in my knee. It doesn't generally cause pain but can periodically if it gets hung up in certain spots.

I believe it is the same thing I had several years ago that went away. At that time I talked to a sports med/ortho and he said it was nothing to worry about, if it kept bothering me it could be removed. I believe that he said it was something that was present in everyone's knee from fetal development and that it only at times in certain people would work it's way to the surface area and often worked it's way back down under again.
Any idea what this would be?
Thanks.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi and welcome to HCM

Well, without a clinical evaluation it would be difficult to determine the cause of the lump. Possibilities that may need to be considered include enlarged bursa, lipomas, cysts, growths from underlying connective tissue etc.
I would suggest getting this evaluated by an orthopedician for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. You may get the X-ray of the area affected and FNAC (fine needle aspiration cytology) of lump under his/her guidance.

Hope this will helps you. Take care.
