Mucus In Lungs, Wheezing, Cough, Constipation, Heart Burn. On Lactogen. What Is Wrong?
Good morning
I have a 10month old infant. He has a continuous problem with mucus on his lungs, wheezing and coughing since December (when I started with formula- Lactogen). He was on antibiotics for December and January plus 'aspelone' and other cough medication (currently). The last few days he woke up in the evenings, screaming and crying a lot for about an hour. Coughing and vomiting accompanied this. I changed from Lactogen to NAN a month ago to try to establish whether the milk may be the problem. He is also experiencing constipation quite regularly. I am suspecting that he may have heartburn. I've been to several doctors without a solution.
Hello, if your child is having frequent chest infections giving antibiotics alone may not be good enough. For wheezing sometimes a trial of salbutamol via inhaler may be given for a few days and then tapered off.The technique of giving salbutamol via a spacer has to be taught by the doctor. If the wheezing persists a preventer in the form of a chewable,/ mouth dispersibile tablet or a inhaler may be given.I would advice breast feeding and formula feeding if necessary only.Formula by itself will not cause chest infections but can cause constipation. After 12 months i would switch from formula to cows milk via glass/cup.Bottle feeding is not a great idea.In summary a trial of bronchodilators via spacer may be given for wheezing, minimal antibiotics, gradual change from bottle/formula to cows milk/cup as well as continue breast feeding if possible. After one year it is better to give more of solids than milk products.thanks
