My Catheter Has Been Getting Clogged Up By Sand . What Could Be Causing This?
Hello, I m a t-4 paraplegic with an indwelling catheter. My urine has always had a bit of sediment in it, but lately, past 6 or 7 months, my catheter has been getting clogged up by this sand . I m using a 20fr catheter and it gets clogged in around 2 days. I ve tried drinking tons of water, 10-15 16oz. bottles a day, but the problem still persist. Don t have an UTI. What could be causing this? Thank you.
Hi It is very common to get such findings in patients having long term catheter and the longer the catheter has been, the more it happens. This is due to mucous secretion by the lining of bladder due to irritation by catheter. If it is bothersome then occasionally bladder washout has to done sometimes under cystoscopic guidance. Try changing the catheter more frequently and see whether it helps. Occasionally washing out with solutions such as suby-g seem to help but I personaly do not believe in this.
