My Daughter Was Suffering From Constipation And After Taking Medicines Experiencing Runny Stools
Hi my daughter is 10 and has been suffering with constipation for around a year. Had movicol with not much effect. Been to see gastro consultant who gave her two days treatment of picolax and dull co lax , sorry about the spelling my spell check is messing about! After giving these meds she started passing little lumpy stools and was doing that all day, it was a big amount. Then a few hours later she had two large stools, which I was pleased with because I had been told an enema was next option. However I gave her another dose of dull co lax the next night and now her stools are really runny so I am a bit concerned, is this a side effect. Can you also tell me when would be ok to start her on maintenance dose of movicol. Thanks

I appreciate your concern for your daughter.
Watery stool after dulcolax and picolax is common and it can be caused even at normal therapeutic doses.
In my opinion you should stop dulcolax immediately and give her lots of fluids like ORS, lemon water and fruit juices to maintain good hydration and counter dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.
She doesn't require any more Laxatives now, so please don't start movicol again.
Encourage her to take lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and dietary fiber supplement which will increase roughage and facilitate in bowel evacuation.
