My Left Eye Is Palpitating. Use Computer For Long Hours, But Take A Break Every One Hour. Palpitates Every 15 Minutes. Suggestions?

Starting yesterday, when I wake up, my lower left eye palpitates until now. I'm 38 yrs old and having a 20:20 vision. Though part of my work is using computers, I see to it to rest every hour or more often. The palpitation occures every 15 minutes and it is annoying. Though I dont feel anything that hurts in my eye but it still palpitates.

Hello and welcome to HCM,

Is there associated redness of the eyes?
Palpitations are usually associated with throbbing blood vessels.
Are you suffering from high blood pressure?
Tiredness of eyes cause pain, fatigue, etc.
If you are constantly working on computers, you can use glasses to control glare.
Besides giving regular rest to your eyes, you can use artificial tears, and cold compresses.
If the symptoms still persist, consult an ophthalomologist for clinical examination, investigations to come to correct diagnosis.
The condition can be managed thereafter.

Thanks and take care

Hi,

Thanks for your question.

From the symptoms you are describing you may be experiencing blepharospasm (which just means an involuntary spasm of the eyelid muscles). You might feel this as a shaking / palpitation of the eye itself.

It is very unlikely to be anything serious. Patients often experience this when they are excessively tired or stressed. Occasionally patients may have other eye problems that have precipitated the condition. There are some neurological associations but these are rare and you would have noticed other problems.

In most cases no specific cause is found and as this is your first episode further investigation is probably not indicated.

For now, try not to worry about it. Cut down on things like caffeine and the amount of time you are straining your eyes on the computer. Also make sure you are getting enough sleep. You should notice an improvement with these simple measures.

If you find that your symptoms are getting worse and the condition is interfering with your day to day life it might be worth seeing an eye doctor as they may decide to rule out anything serious. Furthermore, you may be offered simple treatments such as Botox injections into the eyelid skin or medication to control your symptoms.

Regards
