My Son Has A Heart Murmur, What I Have To Do For Him ?

I asked a question a few weeks ago about my son, i have been told he has a heart murmur and that i had to bring him back for a check up. We have gone and it is still there. He is going to be reffered to a specialist now due to this but im still worried as i thought it would have gone by now. I know it could just be a innocent murmur but im now think what if its not. My son is only 7 years old. He is olso getting reffered to a specialist about his tonsils as he needs them out too, he is going to be going through a lot and i just need to be strong for him. Any help on what i have said would be greatful. i know having his tonsils out is not big deal. I have heart problems so im going to worry about him and he does not know much really to do with his heart i just said he needs to get it checked by another doctor . I just think this is a lot for a 7 year old to go through. i have had a few heart op s myself. I just think its a parent thing worrying really.

The good news is that your son's heart murmur will go away. The bad news is that it will not go away on its own. The answer is to have a good (or, better yet, a "top-notch") specialist perform surgery on your 7 year-old little man. A heart murmur is no one's fault. Period. It is a birth defect, and nothing more. But it must be-- at all costs--taken care of. I was also born with a heart murmur, and had-- at the age of 1 year and 4 months young--open heart surgery. Unfortunately for me, the surgeons were not any- where near to "top-notch"--unless, perhaps, they were trying to impress Moe, Larry and Curly: when they closed my chest, it formed a blood clot to my brain; the result was epilepsy. (That was a short eternity ago: I turned 50 in February of this year.) But, fortunately, that's far less likely to happen to your son--since surgical techniques are so much more advanced now. Best of luck to you & your son.

Please don't think this can only be a "birth defect" as the previous poster stated.  Be sure to have your son tested for Hypotrophic Cardiomyopathy.  It's a simple Echo that could save his life.  Please go to www.hcma.org for more information and a listing of doctors in your area who specialize in this.  Hopefully, it is nothing more than a mild heart murmur that he may possibly grow out of.

It is very important to go to a cardiologists who understands this disease as most cardiologists will never have a patient with HCM.

My brother had a heart murmur when he was young. He is not 46 and went away on it's own. Hope all worked out for you!
