Myopia -11, Collisions, Loss Of Peripheral Vision And Responsiveness, Stop Playing Ice Hockey/
I have severe myopia (-11). I play non-checking ice hockey but every once in a while there is inadvertent body collisions which can be serious. Given risk of retinal detachment should I stop playing since I notice that as I ve aged beyond 50 that I m getting into more collisions due to loss of a little peripheral vision and responsiveness.
Contact spot of any sort is a risk factor for retinal detachment in a high myope such as your self. It would not be a bad idea to take some precautions like wearing safety goggles or helmets while engaging in the same.
In india ice hockey is not so popular. so i am unaware of the non checking part. but i guess it means that there is not a lot of dashing and fighting involved in the same.
If that is so then you can continue playing. but do be mindful of the safety aspects.
it would also be a good idea to get your eyes evaluated by a competent eye specialist for the cause of progressive loss of peripheral vision which can occur due to multiple causes viz. high myopia itself, glaucoma etc
enjoy....
