Need Treatment For Asthma With Severe Cough And Cold

My 9 yr old son has asthma. Right now, on top of that he has a severe cough and cold. It is likely viral due to the fact he just had strep last week and is still on antibiotics. He is coughing so hard, it is causing his ribs to heart and his throat to be sore. Normally our asthma doctor or general mms would prescribe a 5 day course of prednisone, but it is the middle of the night. Help?

Hello,

Thank you for asking at HCM.

I went through your son's history and would like to make suggestions for him as follows:

1. Although to help you better, I would like to know severity of his asthma, what inhalers he has been prescribed and how frequently he uses his inhalers.

2. However, in absence of above information, I would suggest him taking an antihistamine (levocetirizine/cetirizine) and montelukast, which will help both cold and asthma.

3. I would also suggest him warm saline gargles, which will help throat.

4. If he has wheezing or difficulty in breathing, I would suggest him to use a rescue inhaler like salbutamol or levosalbutamol, as prescribed by his doctor.

4. If he has wheezing and difficulty in breathing which does not respond to inhalers, he might need prednisolone and also his inhaler therapy would be required to be reviewed by his doctor.

Hope above suggestions will be helpful to him.
