Hi,
You sister seems to have been initiated on Non Invasive Ventilation (NIV). One of the most common indiactions is Obstructive sleep apnaoea. NIV (CPAP) usually has a limit of 14 to 16. If the pressure exceeds this i.e the patient does not maintain Oxygen saturation even on these pressures then the mode is shifted to AUTO CPAP or Bipap. This is what your physician is doing. A smart machine or automatic machine - automatically changes the pressure as per the oxygen saturation and pressure requirements.
