No Signs Of Breathing In A Baby. What Was The Movement In Chest? Sleep Apnea?
Yesterday while checking on my 3 months baby I couldn t see any signs of breathing . So I nudged him and called his name, still wouldn t wake up. I paniked and carried him from his crib to my room - he felt lifeless- and started to remove his pjs, then I saw a slight movement in his chest . I nudged him again and again but wouldn t wake up but he was breathing. Took him to the emergency at the hospital and they told me that everything is normal an he was in deep sleep. I m terrified that he had sleep apnea and we discovered it at the right time, can it be? What can I do to prevent this in the future? I follow all guidelines to prevent SIDS.
Such moment always create anxiety. During a tense moment like this, you can certainly do 2 things.
1. Check your baby's pulse by placing your index finger on the baby's wrist. Use two fingers (index and middle) to locate the pulse on the wrist at the base of the thumb. The pulse feels like a rhythmic thumping. If the pulse is more than 100, its fine.
2. Does the baby's colour remain normal or become pale during such an episode ? If there is no change in colour or the baby continues to remain pink, its normal.
Do keep in mind that no blood test can diagnose sleep apnea. It can be easily missed on a routine check up.
However the more serious type, ie central sleep apnea and thankfully less common, occurs in the backdrop of some medical disorder.
So if your baby has had no medical illness recently, it is unlikely your baby has a problem.
