Numbness In Toes, Blood Sugar High, Treated ITP With Steroids Earlier. Numbness Due To High Blood Sugar?

Good morning, 12 months ago I expericened ITP. I was treated with steroids, Igbh, ( hope that is correct), and finally with Vinchristine. My platelets count climbed to the normal range and is continuing to hold around 150K to 175K without further treatment

I came home continuing the steroids. Over a peroid of about 21 days my blood sugar went through the roof -- over 1000!!! With insulin, over the next 6 weeks my steroid induced diabetes retuned to normal.

During this time all of my toes became numb. Could the numbness have been caused by the elevated blood sugar?

Thanks,
Bill Shivers

hi,Thanks for visiting health care magic
diabetes is one of the disease that will causes complications to all the systems in the body , because of the increased blood glucose level for the long time it causes the peripheral neuropathy of the peripheral nervous system , that is nerves decrease its response to cold, touch and temperature. one of the long term complication of the steroids is neuropathy . So both the steroid and blood glucose level were contributing factors for ur numbness of toes , so please keep control over blood glucose and minimize use of steroids
Thank you

General & Family Physician Dr. Pavan Kumar Gupta's  Response
Hello,
Severe uncontrolled diabetes results in numbness of toes and feet and is called as diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
Since longest nerves in the body are first to be affected by high glucose levels, toes and feet are the first places to get affected by uncontrolled diabetes.
Sometimes there is associate burning and tingling also present and is due to nerve irritation.
Treatment involves meticulous of blood sugar levels, injectable B12 because of associated deficiency of B 12 and drugs like gabapentin or DULOXETINE etc.
Nerves are generally capable of healing if blood sugar levels are kept normal.
Thanks

DEAR SIR/MADAM

WELCOME TO HEALTH CARE MAGIC.

HYPERGLYCEMIA CAUSED LOT OF INFLAMMATORY AND VITAMIN DEPILATORY REACTIONS IN THE BODY CAUSING NERVE IRRITATION, USUALLY IT IS REVERSIBLE IF IT HAPPENS FOR A SHORTER DURATION LIKE STEROID INDUCED.

GRADUALLY WITH GOOD SUGAR CONTROL YOU WILL FEEL BETTER IT WONT STAY FOR A LONG TIME.

FOR BETTER RESULTS YOU CAN TAKE METHYLCOBALAMINE, ALPHA LIPOIC ACID, PYRIDOXINE AND FOLIC ACID TABLET COMBINATION AFTER CONSULTING YOUR TREATING PHYSICIAN.

DEFINATELY YOU WILL EXPERIENCE BETTER RESULTS.

THANKS
