On Medication For Stress, Anxiety And Hypertension. Food Cravings. What To Do?
I was diagnosed with high blood pressure in December and am now on medication as well as being treated for stress and anxiety. I have been craving for salt, but more so for tomatos and tomato juice, lime juice with water and salt, I just have to have these every day or every other day. It is worrying as i know i shouldn't be consuming salt and i cannot stay away form the juices or tomatos. Please acvise.
Dear Sir
Thanks for writing to us.
A craving usually is secondary to either the need of the body or its a reaction to prohibition. Please Check if you have been given some drugs or otherwise your sodium levels are below normal? if it is simply because you have been advised to stay away from salt, please do so. Because it is a proven fact that reduction in salt intake reduces BP. You may take help of counselor/ dietitian for this issue. Try to meditate , remain calm/relaxed and do exercise (as per your physicians advise).

The use of tomatoes or tomato juice will not cause a problem with your blood pressure. Tomatoes and tomato juice are high in fiber ,contain vitamin c and magnesium. They also contain antioxidants that are thought to be helpful in preventing cancer, heart disease and may actually play a role in decreasing blood pressure.
So there is no problem with your use of tomatoes or its juice.
I hope this helps
