General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

Painful shoulders can be caused by: (1) trauma to the area
(2) osteoarthritis of the shoulder
(3)rheumatoid arthritis
(4)frozen shoulder
(5)tear of one of the muscles in the tendon cuff- one of the muscles in the shoulder
(6)painful arc syndrome- in this case there is pain caused by nipping of tender structure between the top of the humerus and the acromion (one of the parts of the scapula).

If you did not have problems before then osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are less likely.

You may want to consider visiting your doctor for an assessment to determine the exact cause of the pain.

If you are unable to visit soon because you are on holiday then you can consider (1) resting the shoulder joint with intermittent periods of exercise of the joint (2) the use of anti inflammatory pain killers such as ibuprofen, diclofenac, aspirin, celebrex. These should be used on a full stomach.

I hope this helps

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.
It looks from the description that you could be having a musculotendinous problem in your shoulder, propably a degenerative rotator cuff lesion. I advise
* rest to the shoulder joint movements
* apply ice packing
* local analgesic gels and oral analgesics for few days
If you are not getting any relief with the above measures, I suggest an MRI scan which will pick up all the problems in the shoulder joint.
Hope this helps
