Painful Lump In My Sons Neck
my 16 year old son has a large tight lump on the left side of his neck, just below jawline, and ear, it started last night at about 6.30pm and is now quite painful, he has had 2 paracetamol, what could this be and does he need to see a doctor ?

Hi,
This is called a lymph node which enlarges during an attack of infection in the throat. He needs antibiotics, hence requires a thorough check-up by a good ENT specialist.

You may get a USG (Ultrasound) Neck done to rule out salivary gland enlargement such as parotitis due to mumps or duct blockage. the thick outer parotid fascia (covering of the parotid gland) makes such swellings tight and extremely painful. USG Neck will also help differentiate between an enlarged lymph node and the submandibular salivary gland. A detailed history and examination by your local doctor will help if his swelling increases or the pain does not subside with paracetamol. Does he have any dental problem?
