hi and welcome,
Painless brown dots seen on the tongue is the phenomenon called HAIRY tongue or black hairy tongue. It is usually caused due to fungal infection. it is associated with tobacco chewing and smoking, poor oral hygiene, dry mouth or xerostomia.
Due to decreased salivary secretion or xerostomia fungal growth is seen on the tongue surface and it often shows growth of the tongue papillae which is seen as brown dots.
If not treated in time it may undergo super infection with candida albicans known as candidiasis.
Oral firoma is another condition which shows formation of small dots on tongue surface. exact diagnosis can be made after clinical examination only so i suggest you to visit a dentist and get the evaluation done. fungal growths subside with the appropriate treatment.
Meantime you can apply nystatin oral gel topicaaly over the tongue surface, maintain good oral hygiene using tongue scrappers and cleaners. use mouth rinses for gargling.
take care.

Hi,
Thank you for the query.
According to the history , it suggests you have black hairy tongue formed by the lengthening of the papillae which are bumps on the surface of the tongue ,where the ends of the papillae get rubbed away by food but sometimes they form an abnormal coat on the surface of the tongue which gets discolored because of the food, tobacco or smoking. This conditon doesnot involve any kind of bacteria or fungi and generally resolves on its own. It can be treated by brushing twice and cleaning the tongue using a soft tooth brush. Sometimes it presents as a side effect of using pencillin or certain vitamins or sometimes bulimia.
Hope this information helps you .
Take care.

Thanks for sharing your concern.

Painless brown dots seen on the tongue is the called HAIRY tongue or black hairy tongue.

This condition is characterised by hypertrophy of the filiform papillae of the tongue with lack of, normal desquamation which may be extensive and form a thick matted layer on the doorsal surface.

The colour of the papillae various from yelloish white to brown or even black depending upon their staining from such extrinsing factor as tobocco, certain foods, medicine or chromogenic organism of the oral cavity.

Sometimes antibiotic like AUREOMYCIN, SODIUM PERBORATE, SODIUM PEROXIDE may cause this.
Are you smoking?

Discontinuation of the habit might help. This is the benign condition.

Food debris often collect deep between papillae and produces irriation of tongue. In such cases the TONGUE MAY BE BRUSHED with a tooth brush to promote desquamation and remove the debris.

Hope this helps
