Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
If there is a stone in the common bile duct then this can be treated endoscopically with ERCP or by open surgery. It is always better to do ERCP which is less invasive, however, sometimes it may not be feasible and surgery is the only option. If this obstruction is caused by tumor then he should undergo surgery. Dilated bile duct means that there are serious issues and hyperbilirubinemia and treatment should be started as soon as possible to prevent serious consequences. It can be treated with medications, unfortunately.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
