Planning For A Baby. How Safe Is IVF Process?

Hi Dr Grief, I turned 51 in September, a mother of 6 children. My youngest is 14 and so I am planning on having another child for my husband to be who is 45. He wants us to have a child together as he only has one from a previous marriage. But I am concern about my age now and the risks involved in having one. I also had a tubal ligation after my youngest was born. We are thinking about IVF and so I am seeking medical opinion regarding the process, risk factors, etc...

Hi,
Thanks for the query.
As you have undergone tubal ligation, IVF is the better option to you.
But according to your age, the problems that can arise are :
- Possibility of decreased ovarian reserve.
That can affect the success of IVF.
-Increased chances of medical complications like hypertension, diabetes etc.
- At the time of delivery also complications can arise and there is increase possibility of surgical intervention.
So, you consult gynecologist once and discuss these possibilities.
Then with her advice, go for estimation of AMH (Anti mullerian hormone).
This helps in estimation of ovarian reserve.
If reserve is sufficient, you can go for IVF after other investigations.
If not you may have to depend on donar egg.
So, by taking all these points into consideration, you can decide further.
Take care.
