Pregnant. History Of Mono. Earlier Had Spleen Swelling. How Will Fetus Development Be Affected?

I am 21 years old, female, 130lbs, 5ft 5inch and I am currently 26 weeks pregnant. I suffered from mono at the age of 13 and ever since my spleen has flare ups when im too active, or get a cold. I was recently told going into the hospital for pain and discomfort on my left side my spleen has swollen to 19cm. all labs came back normal. I am concerned of what this will do to effect the development of my pregnancy, my OB says she knows nothing about the spleen being enlarged during pregnancy and to basicly tough it out. I am very concerned being that I need help getting out of bed and cannot eat large meals from the discomfort of my uterus pushing on my spleen, is this something I should change doctors to investigate?

Hello and welcome to HCM.

Thank you for your query.

I can understand your concern, but the spleen usually during an episode of inflammation (spleenomegaly), is only a concern as it is a vital organ in production of red blood cells. During a flare up, resulting in inflammation of the spleen, its functions might be distorted or temporarily suspended. Which is why we will have to constantly monitor your blood levels.

If there is a drop or abnormality it can prove to be a threat to your baby. You are still at least 6-10 weeks away from delivery, which means, if there are any abnormalities noted, they will have to be corrected. This is usually done with the help of blood transfusions.

In most pregnant women with spleenomegaly, a cesarean section is advised, but this again depends on your doctor's expertise. Wishing you lots of luck and an uneventful pregnancy that yields a healthy baby. Best of luck.

I hope I have succeeded in providing the information you were looking for. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications at: http://doctor.healthcaremagic.com/doctors/dr-shoaib-khan/64581 . I would gladly help you.

Best wishes.
