Hello, Keratoconus is not known to be transmitted from parents to children commonly. The cause for keratoconus are varied and it is not compulsory that your child also gets keratoconus. However higher refractive errors like pathological myopia are known to be familial. Hence I advice you to get your baby screened if you or your wife are having higher refractive errors. THANK YOU
Hello and welcome to HCM, Keratoconus is not genetic disorder. It is not transmitted by sex chromosomes. However, familial clustering of keratoconus is known to occur. It is a degenerative disorder of the cornea. There are no risk factors known to be associated with keratoconus. So, there are actually no precautions that one can take to prevent it in further progeny. It is difficult to predict whether your children will develop keratoconus or not. Never-the-less, you can keep your child(ren) on regular follow up with your ophthalmologist.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja P Wahal
